There is a lot of discussion at the moment about the relative merits of state schools, public schools, comprehensive and grammar schools. As far as I am concerned, whatever the type of school, it should aim to cater for all the students it has and ensure that all are given the opportunity to be successful. We are, as it happens, a comprehensive school and proud of it. I’ll tell you why.
We have a student intake which draws from a very wide range of backgrounds and skill levels. We are, if you like, a microcosm of society: there are no selection procedures and there are no entry requirements other than you will normally have to live in the catchment area and be of the right age.
Yet each year, our students go on to the next stage of their lives having achieved success, almost always to a degree that allows them to do what they had planned to do – or more. That could be further education (at 16, most choose to stay on here), university (15 Oxbridge applicants this year), employment or gap years.
In short, being a comprehensive school to us means ensuring that all students are given the tools, expert guidance and support they need to achieve their potential and fulfil their aims, irrespective of their abilities or aptitudes.
Speaking of which, here’s a sample from our Jazz and Soul Band’s new CD. The album is fantastic and I thoroughly recommend it! It’s also a perfect illustration of the amazing outcomes that can be achieved when students are involved in extra-curricular pursuits.
